All cars originally equipped with halogen headlight bulbs can switch to LED lights.
The main advantage is it greatly improves road lighting, and this can raise safety level when you drive at night. The LED bulbs i use myself output 3200 lumens. Normally factory halogen bulbs only produce 1000 lumens. Actually lumens dont need to be too high, it will shorten service life of the bulbs. Especially people who drive at night frequently, and turn on headlights for hours everyday, halogen bulbs often burn out within 3 months. Under this situation switching to LED headlights is really a good option.
Step 1: Confirm your headlight bulb model
Find out the model and compatible type of your headlight bulb; you can search it on e-commerce platforms, or check at nearby auto parts market. For example the common 9005 halogen lamp
There are two types of bulbs as below:
1, Single beam bulb – separate bulbs for high beam and low beam
2, Dual beam bulb – high beam and low beam integrated in one single bulb (dual beam all-in-one lamp) it uses a reflector inside to adjust light projection, Roewe ei5 is one of the common car models using this bulb
If you cannot find your car model on online shopping sites, you can try these other ways to confirm bulb type:
Check your car owner manual
Contact vehicle manufacturer through local car dealer
Take out the old headlight bulb and read the marked specs on it
write down your bulb model clearly
Step 2: Buy LED conversion kit
Step 3: Unpack your LED kit
After receiving the LED headlight kit, check if all matching accessories are complete. The package should contain two LED bulbs, two ballasts and connecting wires.
Step 4: Take photos of original installation position
Before installing new LED headlights, take several photos of original halogen lamp structure so you can compare the difference later on
Step 5: Locate the headlight bulb
First make sure your car is parked safely. Turn off engine, take car key out from ignition slot, and pull up parking brake.
Open the hood, then find your headlight bulb
Unplug plastic wiring connector from the bulb.
Tip: If you never replaced headlight bulbs before, you may need a flat screwdriver to gently pry open the plastic clip.
Step 6: Remove old halogen bulb
Depends on your bulb type, you might need to take off metal retaining clip first, then twist bulb counterclockwise and pull it out slowly
Tip: Keep your original halogen bulbs in a safe place. You may need them someday in the future.
Step 7: Install LED bulb
Put LED bulb into headlight socket, do not touch LED chips with bare hands (here is a useful installation trick, the lamp base has three uneven lugs with asymmetric tilt angles, dont waste time struggling to match angles, just align the smallest lug with the smallest slot on the socket)
Twist bulb clockwise gently to lock it firmly
Step 8: Connect LED ballast wire
Link up wires of LED ballast. One end connects to new LED bulb, the other end links to original car wiring harness, pay attention to match positive and negative poles correctly for LED lights.
Step 9: Check light cutoff line
Turn on headlights, inspect the position of light cutoff line.
You dont wanna blind other road drivers with super bright new lamps, so you may need to adjust headlight height. This can be done by twisting headlight alignment screws. Read your car user manual for detailed operation guides
Step 10: Fix ballast firmly
Stick ballast with double sided tape or plastic cable ties
Warm reminder: You need to place ballast away from high temperature generated by LED chips, to avoid overheating, vibration and moisture damage. It is suggested to mount it on the back side of headlight housing.
